Chinese Circuit Assembly 保護你的頭腦

Today (Saturday) we went to the Chinese "Safeguard Your Mind" Circuit Assembly. We met up with Tim and Jamie and followed them to the Assembly, which was in an auditorium/Gym of a high school about 20-25min from our house. The Assembly was great, although the seats were really hard the atmosphere was wonderful. Even though I really didn't understand anything but a few words here and there, and some of the scriptures. When you are among Jehovah's people you know you are in the right place. I was able to understand a complete thought thanks to what we had learned in school. He was talking about how people are proud to say what nationality they are and how we should be just as proud to say that we are citizens of God's Kingdom. Hannah understood more than she was expecting, she even got one of the jokes that the brother made about how we were going to consider some of Peter's mistakes and that he is in heaven listening right now.

The Baptism was really interesting, instead of having a pool like we would normally have they had this tank only big enough for one person and the brother who baptized them actually stood out side of the tank. I think there were 18 baptized, 3 of which were from our hall (Nantun).

Baptism Pool

Some cool stats from today were: for the morning session there were 1530 in attendance. Of those 340 were regular pioneers and 52 were special pioneers.

This sister sat next to Hannah and helped us every once and a while if we didn't catch the scripture. They talked for about 15 min after the assembly, and only in Chinese. The sister was really encouraging. She kept saying how much she appreciated foreigners working so hard to preach in Chinese. That it built her up, and helped her continue in her preaching work. They exchanged information so we can visit her in her congregation.
This Brother and Sister sat in front of us. After the assembly I talked to him for a long time, he got the truth in Wisconsin when he was attending school. He was so nice and spoke English very well.

I will try to publish some video of the baptism later right now our internet is running to slow to do so.

New Apartment

Well the Past few days have been crazy busy! On Sunday we had made our decision to move into the smaller apartment. It was all set we would both sign the papers and move in on Monday at 2pm. After class I get a call from Tim telling me that when he called the agent with the larger apartment to tell her we were going with the other one she made an offer. Apparently the land lord is desperate to get someone in that apartment so he offered it to us for 12200nt a month including internet and guard fee. A tempting offer since we would be paying 10900nt for a much smaller apartment. So we had some thinking to do, we went to Starbucks and Split a Caramel Macchiato and went over the pluses and minuses of both then we said a prayer. We realized that the up keep of the other apartment would take a lot more work, that it might make it tempting to buy more things since it was so big, and it was still cheaper for the other one. And most importantly I remembered our lesson from the Watchtower the day before let your yes mean yes. We had already told the agent we wanted the apartment and everything was scheduled. Even if we weren't in a contract yet we didn't have to be we had said yes we needed to make it mean yes. After making our decision we felt good.

So 2pm came and with the help of Tim and Jamie we walked all of our suitcases over about a block to the new apartment. Signed the paper work and payed the deposit and first months rent. After they left we made a couple scooter trips to the store to get everything we would need to survive. It is amazing how many things you have to have (it also seems like a lot more when you have to carry them on a scooter) and yet how many other things you really don't need. When we got home we couldn't figure out how to unlock our door and after about 5 min of trying Hannah went down and got the guard to help us (Again nothing makes you question your intelligence more than being in another country).

Once we got inside Hannah started scrubbing the bathroom. The rest of the apartment is new and clean but the bathroom was a different story and kinda gross. It had lots of mold. After a lot of cleaning, laundry and unpacking we looked at the clock to realize it was 1:30 AM and we had a test in the morning! So after practicing about 6 characters we fell asleep.

Mold!

After a short nights sleep we headed to school and took our test. It involved listening and circling the correct pinyin with tones, listening and writing pinyin with tones, and the back side was all characters. two parts both questions in characters that you had to read and then write your answer in characters. then another part where there were pictures of 4 different people with there names and nationality and you had to fill in the blanks of the sentences again all in characters. I got a 92 and Hannah Got a 100.

After our elective classes, we went to Moss burger with 3 other witnesses and enjoyed some association with them. They left for class while Hannah and I finished eating. Right after they left Hannah was trying to figure out where to throw away the recylcing and a girl at the next table said in English where to throw it. Hannah had noticed earlier she was watching all of us talk and was smiling. She spoke English well, she turned out to be from Malaysia.  We ended up talking for about an hour and got to witness to her and her Taiwanese friend.  She was really friendly and out going. Several times she told us to visit her in her home country. We exchanged contact info so that we can talk again.

Then after another trip to the store we went home for more organizing and to meet the guy to hook up our internet. He arrived at 3:30 and didn't leave until 6pm. When he left he said that the problem was with our router. So we have wired internet but no wireless for our tablets or phones. After playing with it I really don't think it is the router especially since it is new. It seems that every device connected has to be activated by them like at a hotel where they have you put in your room number before you can browse the internet. It has been kinda frustrating and at the same time kind of nice to have a computer problem that I can work on. We are going to call today and see if they can authenticate our router for us. until then for our tablets we have to position them just right to connect to an open wireless signal.

Today after Class we went to the store again and got a little storage thing for our kitchen area (also lots of fun to carry on a scooter). It is pretty nice and it was only 179nt so like $6.16USD. We also got Hannah some more blankets so she can sleep better.

Once home I started working on getting our wireless router to work again. After about 2 hours on and off the phone they said they would send a tech out on Thursday or Friday. Ugh... oh well not a big deal.
well that is about it for now.

The Great Apartment search

well it has been a few days since we last wrote. We have been busy searching for an apartment. Saturday Tim and I went around to the local buildings to see if there were any available. a 5 month rental on a budget is turning out to be quite the tall order. we called several ads none of which were either willing to do 5 months or just never got back with us after saying they would. Then we just started going into buildings and asking the guard if there were any available. We visited probably about 15 different buildings and heard mei you (no apartments for rent) at most of them. We did meet a real estate agent at one of them though who showed Tim and I 2 apartments. The first was on the 5th floor and a little scary. The second however on the 15th floor was very nice. It has been almost completely redone including new sink, new mattress, new washing machine, new tv ect. It is very nice and I like it alot just a little concerned about the price and the size. It is 11,100nt (382.1USD) per month including the guard fee and would only be 150nt (5.16USD) a month for internet.

When I showed Hannah the pictures of the second apartment with all new furnishings, she immediately loved it. Saturday we went to dinner with Tim and Jamie. Then Tim and I went to go Go Karting with a group from the hall about 20min away but when we got there the track was already closed so we turned around and headed back home.
The extent of my Go Karting experience
Today (Sunday) we called the agent who had shown Tim and I the apartment and asked if Hannah and I could come and see it. He said yes but you have to come right now so we hurried and got ready and ran out the door. Once there Hannah again loved the apartment even though it is really small. We told him we would think about it. Then when we got home we looked at a few more online. Tim called Brian to see if there were any openings in his complex. There was one and the agent was available to show it at 8pm so we went to check it out. It was a pretty nice place and huge compared to the other one we were looking at it had a full kitchen 2 bedrooms and tons of storage. I really liked the size and storage aspects of it but it was still kinda old feeling, and just not as comfortable as the other one. Plus while it was probably a better deal it was still more money per month and for her fee. Additionally we wouldn't even know if we got it until the 15th of January so if it fell through we would have to then try to find a place willing to do only 4 months.

For those reasons we decided that we were going to go with the small apartment with all new furnishings. Tim called for us and negotiated like a pro. He was only able to get them to come down 500nt a month but he did get it so that we get to move in tomorrow and not start paying until the first so in the grand scheme of things he got it pretty close to the price he was shooting for. And now the moment you have been waiting for drum roll please....... the apartment we chose:
Front Door and Kitchen
Kitchen and TV in living room
Living room and stairs up to bedroom

New Mattress

Tiny Washing machine
The View From our balcony

Well That is it for now we will meet with him tomorrow at 2pm to get the keys and we can move in after that. Busy day tomorrow. Well until we have more or we have internet again which ever comes first...

More scooter problems

Well here we are again. This morning (Thursday) Hannah woke up sick with a sore throat and headache. I went ahead and got ready to go to school and when I was not quite half way there the scooter stopped accelerating. It slowed down and I pulled over to the side and turned it off. After waiting for about 5 min I started it up again and tried to go, but it would not go anywhere. After about 10 minutes of trying I called Brian, he called Brother Liu who had helped us buy the scooter. He said he would come find me. I saw him drive past and then a few min later Sister Leo came I tried to tell her what it was doing; she got on and started it right up and took off. I felt like an idiot that I had called all of these people and it was just going to work.

Brian called again and I told him again where I was and he came and found me and I told him what happened a few min later we saw Sister Leo coming back but she was going really slow then stopping going for a little while then stopping, there was defiantly something wrong with the scooter. So while I was sad that there was something wrong at the same time I was kinda glad that I wasn't just stupid and there actually was something wrong with the scooter.

She called the shop where we bought the scooter, and they came and towed it back to the shop for repair. Brian gave me a ride home since class was almost over anyways. Maybe sometime soon we can go more than a few days without having scooter problems... Maybe.

About 2:30 Brian called me and said the bike was fixed and sister Liu came and dropped it off for us.

We can't thank the friends enough for all of their help. Only among Jehovah's people can such kindness be found. Daily we thank Jehovah for our wonderful friends who take care of us no matter where we are. Our international brotherhood is truly beautiful.

We are also happy to report that Tim and Jamie are back safe and sound from China. We had a nice evening with them catching up.

Since it is nearing the end of our first month here, we now really have to buckle down in our search for an apartment.

We will keep you all posted on any interesting developments.

Journey to a possible apartment

Today (Wednesday) Hannah had an appointment with Sioux to go on a few bible studies. This was her first time driving the scooter anywhere by her self. After I drew her a map, I'm happy to report she made it there and back with out getting horribly lost.

Once she got back we had an appointment to go and see an apartment which we assumed was in our same building since that is where we found the posting.... As usual we were wrong. We went to where we thought we were suppose to meet him but he wasn't there. He called us and we told him where we were, and he told us we were in the wrong place and said again where to go. After walking to 3 other places and crossing the same street twice we asked him just to meet us at the Family Mart which is part of our building. After waiting for 5 min he called and asked where we were. He was at the 7-11 at the end of the block; so we told him we would meet him there and we ran to meet him.

Once we met him he said that he would ride his bicycle to the apartment and we could follow. We saw him get on a scooter and our confidence in his English ability, and our Chinese dropped a few more points. we followed him there about a block away from where we are staying now. It is a really nice little apartment on the 5th floor and it is a corner apartment so it has a nice layout. Also right in front of it is a community garden where anyone can plant. Also on the first floor there is a really cool garden. It is a little more than we would like to spend on an apartment that size but he said since we don't need the parking spot they could probably drop the price some. Also they were willing to work with us with a short term lease. While we don't feel it is perfect for a few things like that we have to call to have the gas container filled so we can have hot water, and there is no stove top we think it is a possibility still. We still have some time to find one and we don't want to jump into the first one we see much more thought and prayer needs to go into the decision.

Here are some pictures of the apartment:
